Io amo l’Irlanda, Ho appena trascorso un altro splendido Natale lì. Un famoso poeta irlandese, William Butler Yeats, scrisse: “ Ed io avrò un po’ di pace lì, perché la pace arriva lentamente.
Gli ultimi 20 anni hanno cambiato lentamente anche il sentire e le abitudini sessuali in Irlanda. Radicali cambiamenti hanno trasformato le leggi locali sulla contraccezione, il divorzio, l’aborto e il matrimonio fra persone dello stesso sesso. Questo abissale cambiamento ha richiesto un completo cambiamento in merito al modo di pensare il ruolo della chiesa Cattolica nei vari aspetti della società irlandese.
Nel 2015 l’Irlanda divenne il primo paese al mondo ad approvare il matrimonio fra persone dello stesso sesso attraverso il voto popolare. Il referendum si concluse con il 62% dei voti a favore ed un 38% contrario. Il che comporta che il matrimonio può avvenire legalmente fra due persone senza alcuna distinzione di sesso.
L’ aborto è stato introdotto tramite un referendum l’anno scorso, ma solo dopo tre precedenti tentantivi falliti nel 1983, 1992 e 2002 rigurado un accesso comunque molto limitato a questa pratica. L’ aborto può essere una decinsione molto difficile per una donna, a seconda delle sue personali circostanze.
L’introduzione del divorzio ha richiesto un primo referendum nel 1986, seguito da un altro nel 1995 che consentiva il divorzio solo dopo 4 anni di separazione. Un nuovo referendum è previsto per il 2019 al fine di ridurre da 4 a 2 anni il tempo di attesa per il divorzio. L’idea alla base di questa norma è che una coppia potrebbe cambiare idea durante il biennio.
Ma è la storia di come l’Irlanda finalmente approvò l’uso dei sistemi contraccettivi e dei preservativi a costituire l’esempio migliore di come i cambiamenti procedano lentamente nel paese.
Dal 1935 al 1978 era illegale comprare o importare contraccettivi come i preservativi o le pillola in quella che spesso veniva definita la Cattolica Irlanda. All’inizio del 1971 la Sentatrice Mary Robinson (la quale in seguito divenne presidente) tentò di introdurre una prima legge per cambiare la situazione ma il governo non ne approvò la discussione.
A 165 chilometri di distanza in Belfast, nell’ Irlanda del Nord, la quale era parte del Regno Unito, chiunque poteva comprare i preservativi. Il 22 Maggio 1971 un gruppo di femministe irlandesi viaggiò fino alla città di Belfast, in quella che divenne nota come la Carovana dei Preservati. Furono fotografate al ritono a Dublino cariche di contraccettivi, esprimendo la loro opinione sul fatto che la legge di bando dei contraccettivi fosse una stronzata. Nel 1979 fu introdotta la legge sulla Salute (per la pianificazione familiare) da Charles Haughey. Questa norma prevedeva un limitato ricorso ai contraccettivi per “un adeguata pianificazione familire in buona fede”. I preservativi potevano essere acquistati solo con una prescirzione medica di un dottore abilitato.
La stessa legge consenvita l’importazione di quantità limitate di contraccettivi da un viaggiatore per uso personale. Charles Haughey affermò che questa legge era una “soluzione irlandese ad un problema irlandese”
–L’ Emendamento del 1985 alle legge sulla Salute (Pianificazione Familiare), introdusse la libera vendita di di preservativi e spermicidi a persone sopra i 18 anni senza presentare una ricetta medica, ma solo in esercizi autorizzati. Sei anni dopo tali limitazione erano ancora le legge in Irlanda. Il Megastore della Virgin, decise che tale norma fosse una cazzata e consentì all’Associazione Irlandese per la Pianificazione Familiare di vendere profilattici a quelle persone che ne avessero avuto bisongo, ragazzi per lo più, nella proporia sede di Dublino.
In uno dei processi più ridicoli di sempre in una corte d’Irlanda, la vendita di un singolo preservativo in Dublino comportò un’ indagine che finì nel 1991 con una multa di £400 a carico della IFPA e lo Store della Virgin. In Appello,la sanzione fu incrementata a £500, in seguito il giudice emettente la sentenza fu accusato di essere stato comunque troppo indulgente. La legge di allora prevedeva che ogni ulteriore vendita di preservativi avrebbe comportato una multa di £ 5.000, con un’ulteriore sanzione di £ 250 per ogni singolo giorno che i preservativi avessero continuato ad essere venduti, con l’aggiunta di un possibile imprigionamento.
La rabbia pubblica finalmente spinse i politici ad agire. Mentre il governo discuteva sui cambiamenti, i leader della Chiesa cattolica si scagliavano contro di loro, avvertendo che un maggiore accesso ai contraccettivi avrebbe incoraggiato la decadenza morale dell’Irlanda, portando a più figli illegittimi e aumentando l’incidenza di aborto e malattie veneree. L’arcivescovo cattolico di Dublino sosteneva che la legislazione avrebbe mandato l’Irlanda giù per “una china scivolosa di degrado morale”.
Le nuove leggi che rimuovevano le restrizioni sulla disponibilità dei contraccettivi sono state approvate nel 1993 e la contraccezione è finalmente diventata ampiamente disponibile, dopo una lunga e dura lotta. La loro nuova mentalità aperta sul sesso e la sessualità ha:
❖aiutato uomini e donne che non erano in grado di sposarsi a vivere delle vite normali insieme,
❖dare seconda possibilità quelle coppie con matrimoni falliti,
❖ permettesso alle donne di decidere in merito al loro corpo per quanto riguarda la salute fisica e mentale ,
❖ Ed ancora ha consento di pianificare le loro famiglie e vivere una vita più felice dentro e fuori dal matrimonio,
❖ Incoraggiato le persone a godersi il sesso senza la preoccupazione di una gravidanza indesiderata
Il mio ultimo consiglio in questo blog è di ricordare che l’uso del preservativo salva la vita proteggendo dalle malattie sessualmente trasmissibili.
